Here are some suggestions on how you can help your child understand how to dress for themselves:
1. Families rush to leave the house in the morning and time for practice is often minimal. At first, it can be beneficial to practice only at the time for bathing or bedtime when there isn't as much of a rush to go towards the front door. The clothes worn at night can be more suited for children to start practicing on because they typically do not include zippers or buttons.
2. When shopping for clothes, look for practical items like clothes with large buttons and button holes or Velcro. These will be more convenient for children to work with and also will give them confidence and confidence. They will also inspire them to explore things that might require more time to master, such as garments with zippers or ones with buttons that are smaller. In the case of shoes, begin with slip-on footwear or shoes with Velcro and get them comfortable with being able to wear them without a tie.
3. Find creative ways to aid your child in learning the proper way to dress. Shopping for clothes with symbols, designs, or logos on the front of the garment will aid them in determining which side is front and back. To teach your child what shoes go on the right foot, distinguish the left from the right. One fun method to aid them in remembering could be to grab an image and cut the sticker in two. Put the right half to the outside of the right foot and the left half inside the right shoe. Instruct them that putting on their shoes properly will complete the whole sticker.
4. Practice! Learning how to button or zip up clothes may initially be challenging. Let them practice using the doll or a stuffed animal as they improve their fine motor abilities and learn to change their outfits in dress-up and pretend to play. It will require time and lots of practice before mastering it.
At Casa Dee Montessori School, we believe in playing to learn. The experiences that we offer our children include educational elements that are planned. However, they are delivered by playing.
