Besides being a eco-tourism hotspot since being located on an advantageous position on the Western Ghats, Coorg is also fancied by a good number of holidayers and study tourists as a place offering monuments of historical importance.The most significant among a handful of historically significant attractions in Coorg is the Omkareshwara Temple established in Muhammadan architectural style in 1820 by king Lingarajendra II. This temple features a dome at the center besides four corners with turrets. Legend says that the king hand built the temple to appease the vengeful spirit of a pious Brahmin slain by him unjustly.

Another monument in Coorg boasting historical importance is Gaddige that houses the tombs of kings Dodda Virarajendra and Lingarajendra II. The royal tombs also offer a commanding view of the beautiful town.
