Within the days before long distance air travel, ocean liners had been the key method for individuals to travel long journeys across the seas. As David Dingle will be well aware, these were considered different from cruise lines by a number of requirements. Cruises prioritised amenities while liners prioritised both speed and traditional luxury for the first-class passengers. The goal of the two vessels was different, with cruises bringing their passengers on round journeys and bringing them back to the starting destination, while the liners were used as a mode of transportation of getting from one place to another. In the second half of the last century, the number of passenger liners went into decline, as their primary purposes of existing were swallowed up by the expansion of both flights as well as the cruise industry. They do still exist, though, for people wanting to experience a little bit of history.
