What Exactly Is An Abrasion Resistant Steel Plate?

AR steel plate is a type of high-carbon alloy steel plate. This means that AR is tougher because of the carbon addition, and formable and weather-resistant because of the alloys used.

 

Carbon injected during the steel plate's production significantly boosts toughness and hardness while decreasing strength. As a result, AR plate is utilized in industries where abrasions and wear and tear are the primary causes of failure, such as industrial manufacturing, mining, construction, and material handling. AR plate is not suitable for structural applications like support beams in bridges or buildings.

Wear Resistance & Hardness

Plate grades with higher BHNs are often used in applications requiring material that can withstand tremendous levels of wear and stress, such as mining equipment and concrete handling. AR500 or AR600 plates may be selected by project engineers for these applications since they are among the toughest AR grades and thus well-suited for wear resistance.

 

Some applications, such as construction equipment, require more moderate levels of wear resistance. In these cases, project engineers may choose AR plate grades with lower BHN values, such as AR400 and AR450. These grades are tough enough to withstand significant wear and stress without losing other important material properties like ductility.

 

What Exactly Is Through Hardening?

When the grain structure of a Q&T plate changes during the initial heating stage, the composition of the entire plate changes. This is known as through-hardening. Through-hardening is distinct from "case-hardening," also known as "surface-hardening," which simply hardens the surface while leaving the metal further underneath malleable. In this situation, the plate's composition or hardness only changes at the surface level.
