Catalysts for refining are more than just substances that affect reaction rates. They are required during the refining process.

Catalysts for refining are more than just substances that affect reaction rates. They are required during the refining process. The process will fail if the refining catalyst is not present during a required process. For example, hydrocracking will not occur if a hydrocracking Refinery Catalyst  (platinum) is not present in the refinery's hydrocracking unit during the hydrocracking process. Thus, in catalytic refining processes, refining catalysts are not optional; rather, they are required. Refineries' hydroprocessing and cracking units rely heavily on refining catalysts. The reaction of oil fractions with hydrogen in the presence of a catalyst is known as hydroprocessing. Thermal processing is preferred over hydroprocessing.
