What is a plug valve?

A quarter-turn rotational motion manual valve is known as a plug valve. It allows or prevents straight-through flow through the body by using a cylindrical or tapered plug (plug-shaped disc). Plug valves provide a straight path through the ports, allowing fluid to flow through the opening plug with the least amount of turbulence possible. The flow can be totally open or fully closed in either direction.

Plug Valve Working Principle:

A plug inserts into a body of a plug valve that has a tapered or parallel seating. The position of the port, which is a part of the plug's construction, determines how much of the valve may open. The apertures in the valve body through which fluid can enter or exit are known as ports. The fluid flow is completely opened or closed by a 90-degree stopper. Ball valves are more effective than plug valves, which can only be fully open or closed.

Flow through the valve resumes when the opening in the plug is parallel to the intake and outlet ports. Through the smaller area of the plug port, there is a pressure drop. The pressure drop is minimal with a full-area cylindrical plug, though.
