Why only 16% of Students Qualify GATE Every Year?
Why only 16% of Students Qualify GATE Every Year?
In the case of competitive exams GATE(Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering), often there is a lot of doubt among students not just about the syllabus which is relevant to these exams but also around the format, approach and attitude required towards successfully cracking them.

This blog is meant to address some of the common questions like -

1. Can it be possible to crack the GATE Exam when students also have to prepare for college exams?

2. Who conducts these exams?

3. What is the difficulty level of the GATE questions paper

However, for faculty, the single most burning question is this; despite the industry and effort that goes into GATE coaching, how is the passing percentage for the GATE as low as 16% ?

Some of the most common reasons may be the following:

1. Many students who register for the exam may not even attempt it, for a variety of reasons. The most relevant one could be that the timing of the GATE exam clashes with that of Final Semester exams and projects and students would not want to spread their attention too thin. The fee is low enough at Rs. 1500 that they would not mind forfeiting.

2. A lot of students would attempt the exam even if they had not prepared properly for it, just to see how it goes.

3. A third variety would be people who are serious but not really well aware of the GATE exam pattern and quantity of questions. Even looking at GATE previous year's questions papers might not be of great help as the pattern might always change and there is a high chance that, unlike in University Examinations, the same questions might get repeated year after year.

4. If a student does not belong to any of these categories, he/ she might still not do well if unaware of how to pick the right questions to and the right number of questions to answer and additionally, the topics to study and not study.

Our GATE Expert has shared a video which will help you to feel motivated to attempt for the GATE 2022 Exam.

Points that are discussed in this video:

1. Facts about the passing percentages of various streams.

2. Reasons why only 16% sail through GATE.

3. Tips to stay in 16%

Students must keep in mind that the cut off percentage will largely depend on the toughness of the paper itself; the easier the paper, the higher the cutoff will be.

You can use the youtube videos we have uploaded to quickly grasp different concepts.

An important component of the exam is the multiple choice questions, which carry negative markings. It is always a tricky situation when encountering multiple choice questions as we need to plan on whether to answer every single question, only the ones we are 100% confident about or somewhere in between. This is where smart work matters in GATE preparation

It is more important to understand the basics and fundamentals of every subject than to know the right answer for many, many questions because the GATE examiners will twist questions around the same concept and make them very complicated. There are also many questions which involve a combination of concepts and these are the ones to be really watchful of.

There are a lot of choices around test series, both paid and free. It is important that a candidate chooses any GATE Online Test Series which he/she is comfortable around, a series which has chapter wise questions and is able to solve at the chapter level for increasingly tougher levels. Then they can move on to overall tests at different levels. Students should talk to friends for opinions but not solely rely on their judgement.

In terms of GATE mock tests, the best pattern is when the scores in these tests keep gradually increasing with every test that is taken. This ensures that the student remembers most of the content he/she has practiced. The number of tests or questions that the student takes is not super important, rather the student has to figure out how every question can be changed, what happens when one component of the question changes and so on.

It is also important to take notes in shorter format to suit the subject one is studying for. This is the best way of recollecting a lot of information in a very short time. It makes sense to make short notes for almost every subject in the last 6 semesters.

The difference between getting a qualifying score and getting a great GATE score might lie not just in understanding the basic concepts but also how well the above tips and tools are understood and absorbed.

Choosing the right GATE study material is equally crucial for good preparation. Students take shortcuts like having the same notebook for different classes or borrowing notes from some other student who has taken them down.

It is better to have a separate notebook for each subject, leave blanks between each chapter so that we can write down shorter notes when we are taking test series, revising or learning shortcuts. Similarly, it is also good to have a seperate book only to write down all important equations, diagrams or graphs.
