Common Causes of Infertility in Women BY Dr Sujata Rathod

Faced with a condition of infertility, it is essential to understand its cause in order to apply the most appropriate treatment. Nowadays many couples have experienced periods of infertility that have been overcome with some treatment.

Infertility consists in the inability to conceive after a year or more of unprotected sexual relations . Although fertility in women decreases with age, it is important to keep in mind that the problem is not just for women. Men can also suffer from fertility problems.

Infertility has nothing to do with being sterile. There are couples who were able to conceive after going to the doctor. It is thought that around 30% of infertility can be attributed to a female problem. These problems can depend on a wide variety of factors, many of which are treatable.

Therefore, the first and most important step is to determine the cause of fertility problems. Diagnosis of the cause of infertility in women can be accomplished through a wide variety of means. They include visits to fertility specialists, blood tests, pelvic ultrasound, X-rays, and sometimes laparoscopy.

Causes of infertility

In women the most common causes of infertility are:

1. Polycystic ovary syndrome (SOP)

It is a disease that leads the ovaries to segregate excessively high quantities of androgens (male hormones). This often causes problems with ovulation. Women with SOP have very large ovaries that contain multiple and small cysts.

2. Endometriosis

It is produced when endometrial cells (cells inside the uterus) grow outside of it. Anatomy distortion due to endometriosis can block or change the function of the fallopian tubes and prevent sperm from reaching and fertilizing the egg.

3. Fibromas

These are non-carcinogenic masses that appear in the uterus or in the uterine neck. Uterine fibroids are found in one of every four women between 30 and 40 years old. They can cause blockage of the tubes, prevent the embryo from sticking to the uterine wall and cause a miscarriage. The impact of fibroids on fertility depends on their size and location.

4. Premature menopause

Premature ovarian failure is also called early menopause. This term refers to a condition whereby the ovary stops ovulating earlier than normal. The average age rank for menopause ranges from 45 to 55 years. Other medical causes include thyroid disorders and genetic problems.

The age of a woman is an important factor in indicating the possibilities of conception. The conception rate for a normal healthy couple is, at best, 20-25% per menstrual cycle. When a woman turns 35, her fertility begins to decline.

At 40, her conception rate is estimated to range from 8 to 10% per month and at the age of 43, this rate is believed to decrease by 1-3% per month. In addition to a decrease in the rate of pregnancy associated with women, there is also a significant increase in the risk of spontaneous abortion  and chromosomal (genetic) abnormalities.

5. Irregular menstrual cycles

Irregular cycles can suggest problems with ovulation. The average duration of the menstrual cycle is 28 days, but can vary between 25 and 35 days. The cycle is determined by a complex interaction of hormones, therefore any hormonal imbalance can make your period irregular. Although in most cases irregular cycles are not dangerous, it is important to determine their cause.

6. Unexplained infertility

It is estimated that around 10% of infertility cases find no explanation, even after a full medical evaluation.
