The Tesla Powerwall is perhaps the most recognised name in solar battery storage, and recent figures show exactly why. To date, over 33,000 of them have been installed in Australian homes, making up 12% of Tesla’s global battery installations.

The rise of renewables

Tesla Chair, Robyn Denholm, released the figures at the National Clean Energy Summit in Sydney, highlighting a 6x increase in battery installations since 2019. The figures show healthy increases for Tesla Powerwall installations, with significant increases also in electric vehicle sales.

However, the figures also show a unique statistic, with more solar batteries in homes than electric vehicles on the road. It’s no secret that Australia while being a world-leader in terms of rooftop solar installations, is lagging behind in the EV market.

That being said, the Australian Energy market Operator (AEMO) provides data to suggest that roughly 30% of detached homes in Australia have rooftop solar. It reflects around 15GW of distributed solar generation capacity.

Battery storage for residential homes is still price-prohibitive for many, although the AEMO expects that most residential solar systems will include battery storage by 2050.

The great battery revolution

Recent rises in electricity prices from retailers have prompted many to consider solar battery storage. The beauty of battery storage is that you can almost cancel your energy bills completely. All of the solar energy you generate is stored for use when the sun isn’t shining, so you never really need to connect to the main grid. Many customers do it as a backup, just in case, they don’t generate enough solar. But for the most part, you’re energy self-sufficient with batteries.

The uptake of batteries is certainly increasing, with an estimated 140,000 solar batteries in homes around Australia. While Tesla’s 33,000 installations represent around 23% of the market, there are also other options available for consumers.

Interested in solar battery storage?

If you’re keen to join the green revolution in Australia and harness the power of solar energy, we’re here to help. Ahlec Solar offers on-grid solar solutions for those not ready to jump into battery storage. However, we can definitely supply and install solar battery solutions such as the Tesla Powerwall 2 for those looking to break free from rising electricity prices for good.
