Jöns Jakob Berzelius, a Swedish scientist, first used the word "organic chemistry" in 1806; at the time, it only applied to substances that could be created by living things. Friedrich Wöhler, however, debunked the notion that organic molecules cannot be produced synthetically in 1828. Wöhler was successful in creating urea (producing urea from inorganic substances).

The distinction between organic and inorganic chemistry is becoming increasingly hazy because it took scientists until the middle of the 19th century to recognise that a compound's carbon content is its distinguishing feature. However, a distinction between inorganic and Organic Chemicals is still helpful because the reaction processes and material structures frequently vary.
