General Preparation Tips
Sometimes, when you’re taking a timed online keyboard test (such as for medical school or residency), it can be tempting to try and get ahead by memorizing answers. But it’s usually easier to make sure you have time left on your clock at the end of your test rather than having to rush and make silly mistakes because you haven’t practiced enough. Avoid getting into such a mindset: instead, focus on practicing as much as possible so that your typing is second nature. With practice comes speed, accuracy, and confidence. In other words: with practice comes success! The best way to avoid making silly mistakes is understanding how each question will affect your overall score – take our Practice Exams for an idea of what you should aim for with each one!
General Typing Tips
The two most important keys are your left hand’s home row, which is ASDF and your right hand’s home row, which is JKL;. You might want to take some time to memorize these positions before you actually start typing. Start by learning a few basic touch-typing tips: Relax your shoulders and hands. Make sure that both hands are hovering over their home rows with each finger in its designated position before you start typing. Once you have started, do not let either hand leave its home row for any reason. Never look at your fingers or keyboard while typing (this will slow you down). Type out words and sentences without looking at them first, so that key locations become second nature to you.
Case 1 : Capital Letter at the Start of Sentence
When you start a sentence with a capital letter, leave out quotation marks. Many online tests have one or two sample questions like, To be or not to be. Don't include quotation marks unless you are quoting something that is inside of your sentence. Note: These types of sentences can become confusing when punctuation is added later. Here's an example: To be or not to be? That is the question on many people's minds after hearing about these new opportunities for working at home. Do NOT put quotation marks around it; just add your own question mark and period (or whatever else applies.) For example: To be or not to be? That is what so many people are wondering after hearing about new opportunities for working at home.
Case 2 : Two Lines Filled with Text
When you see a two lines with text boxes in your test window, it’s pretty obvious that you are being given a typing test. However, what may be less clear is how to actually type with proper formatting on a computer. This will depend on your previous experience with keyboards and layouts (QWERTY or Dvorak). Once you get over that initial hurdle, however, there are two major types of keyboards for which you should memorize different rules: those that use shift and those that don’t. If the keyboard doesn’t use shift (such as an IT Specialist keyboard), then all characters will be typed by hitting keys one at a time.
Case 3 : Sentences with a capital letter in every word
As we can see, there are different ways in which we can use Capital Letters correctly. Here, I have just given you some of those examples. In case you need more information on Capital Letters Usage , please do not hesitate to contact me at any time. With best wishes for a bright future, Sincerely
Case 4 : Data Entry using Tab key
Tab is generally used for entering data into fields by pressing it once. It automatically inserts a tab symbol (the ASCII value 09h) after moving all other characters or symbols one position to the right. This function is important when filling in forms on websites, since most input fields are separated with only one blank space and without any spaces or tabs allowed between words. Thus, you need to press tab several times until all information required for a given field is highlighted as if it were filled in. This key can be also used for entering some characters and special commands depending on your keyboard layout.
Case 5 : Data Entry using Shift + Tab Key
When you use Shift + Tab key while typing it will insert a TAB character in your document. You can press Shift and then press Tab to shift your cursor forward, moving it one space ahead each time you do so. In case if data entry operator is requested to enter any tab or special characters (Non-US keyboard) in database or any other form fields, generally they used TAB key. When data entry operator inserts tab/special characters using TAB key it is called Data Entry using Shift + Tab Key. Or we can say that when data entry operator types special characters (like #) by pressing only one single button (TAB) then its called Data Entry using Shift + Tab Key.
Case 6 : Wrong Alignment Marks at the End of Paragraphs
In an online typing test, if you type a paragraph and your cursor doesn’t fall perfectly in alignment with a marking line at its end, you may mistakenly think that either (1) you didn’t hit Enter after each sentence; or (2) they do not count new paragraphs. It is actually case 3: When typing paragraphs on computer, NEVER hit Enter twice right after finishing one paragraph. On computer screens, it only takes one click of Enter for a new paragraph to start – but two are needed for typing on paper-based tests. So double-check how your test will be formatted before taking it so that you never make such mistakes on typing tests.
