At a video games auction Mut 22 coins which ran for two days last month, the original copy that was "John Madden Football" sold for $480,000. The sum, which was a significant amount higher than what the game's retail price in the beginning, set a record-setting world record for the highest price ever paid for a sports video game, according to Heritage Auctions.
"This particular copy is unique because it's from the offices of the famous name brand," the auction house mentions. Part of the auction can be donated by Heritage Auctions to a charitable foundation named in honor of Madden.
For the last three decades, the John Madden Football video game franchise brought in greater than $7 billion sales per the New York Times. The show began in 1988 and was then renamed to just "Madden." NFL Network even had a show dedicated to the video gamecalled "Madden NFL Live." It's now the second-highest-selling sports video game in history, behind only the soccer-based series FIFA.
For those who don't know, a new version of "Madden" is released each year, featuring a different athlete on its cover. The most recentedition, Madden 22, included the quarterbacks Tom Brady and Patrick Mahomes. With each new version new player ratings are released for real NFL players, whom you can actually play as when playing the game.
Auctions in January raised Madden 22 coins for sale nearly $5 million. That figure also includes the auction of other notable games.
